The new EU Ambassador, Mr. Christian Berger, presented his credentials to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Ambassador Berger presented President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan with his letter of credence during a ceremony held at the Presidential Palace. With the submission of the letter of credence, Ambassador Berger has now been officially confirmed as the European Union Ambassador and Head of the European Union Delegation to Turkey.
After accepting the letter of credence, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan welcomed and congratulated Ambassador Berger on his new appointment. President Erdoğan and Ambassador Berger posed for press photos before convening for a short meeting.
Ambassador Berger and EU diplomats of the delegation then proceed for an hour long meeting with Deputy Secretary General and Spokesperson of the Presidency Ibrahim Kalın, Deputy Undersecretary at the MFA, , Ahmet Muhtar Gun and Ambassador Sadık Arslan, Senior Advisor to the President for Foreign Affairs.
It is the first official appointment of Mr Berger in Turkey. He was previously Director/Deputy Managing Director for the Middle East and North Africa at the European Union External Action Service (EEAS) in Brussels from 2011 to 2016.
Mr Berger has a deep knowledge of the Middle-East and the Palestinian question and has served for more than 20 years at various positions in the region. He has also occupied important positions related to crisis response and peace-building .
Ambassador Christian Berger is an Austrian citizen. He holds degrees in law from the Universities of Vienna and London and is married with two children.
