Representatives of the EU Delegation and EU Member States met with human rights defenders and experts on 16 August 2016 in the framework of the EU Local Strategy for Human Rights Defenders.
The meeting focused on the legal consequences emanating from the State of Emergency and the challenges faced by human rights defenders, civil society organisations, and some other groups of the society.
In the aftermath of the 15/07 failed coup attempt human rights defenders and civil society organisations reported about cases of violations of human rights, cases of torture and maltreatment, arbitrary detentions, and about other challenges to the fundamental rights.
It was stressed during the meeting that it is important that Turkey’s international human rights obligations are fully respected also under the State of Emergency.
The EU and the EU MS will continue monitoring the situation and will raise any possible concerns in this regard with the Turkey’s authorities.
