PRESS RELEASE
Federica Mogherini, High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the Commission, spoke this afternoon to Secretary-General Thorbjørn Jagland of the Council of Europe (CoE) following his visit to Turkey yesterday.
In the phone-call, Secretary-General Jagland debriefed the High Representative about the discussions he held with the Turkish authorities as well as the political parties on the situation in the country after the attempted coup of 15 July. They reaffirmed the strong condemnation of the attempted coup, the European Union being the first to publicly do so, and to defend the legitimate democratic institutions in Turkey. They also agreed that reactions to the attempted coup need to be in full respect of democracy, rule of law and fundamental freedoms.
The High Representative and the Secretary-General will stay in touch to further follow the developments in Turkey; they also confirmed that the EU institutions and the Council of Europe will continue to work together in this respect.
