The city council of the eastern Marmara province of Yalova elected a councilor from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) in lieu of the previously elected mayor from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) who was dismissed in a corruption case.
AKP town council member Mustafa Tutuk was elected in the third round of voting to replace the CHP Mayor Vefa Salman who had won in the local elections of March 2019 that were re-held though Salman won again at the re-run.
“Anyone who knows me would know that the absence of others wouldn’t make me happy,” Tutuk said.
Salman was dismissed from his elected post on Feb. 27 amid a corruption case that he himself initiated by denouncing a municipal accountant who pocketed 1,428,000 Turkish Lira.
The Interior Ministry had opened an investigation into Salman for “corrupting bids and embezzlement.”
