Solidarity visit of Ambassador Hansjoerg Haber to Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT) on pre-trial detention of Fincancı, Önderoğlu & Nesin


Head of EU Delegation Ambassador Hansjoerg Haber visited today the Human Rights Foundation of Turkey (HRFT) and met with Dr Metin Bakkalcı, Secretary General of the HRFT and Mr Öztürk Türkdoğan, Chairperson of the Human Rights Association to express solidarity with these human rights organisations, following yesterday’s pre-trial detention of the President of HRFT Prof. Şebnem Korur Fincancı, as well as two journalists, Erol Önderoğlu and Ahmet Nesin. He stressed during the meeting that free, diverse and independent media are essential in any democratic society. He also expressed concern that yesterday’s decision of the court goes against Turkey’s commitment to respect the fundamental rights, including freedom of media.
